Description

History buffs will rejoice at Jeff Shaara's latest foray into the glorious days of America's founding. This dramatic sequel to his bestselling RISE TO REBELLION continues his chronicle of the key characters of the American Revolution and animates some of the most compelling scenes in America's history: Washington's harrowing winter at Valley Forge, Benedict Arnold's tragic downfall, and the fiercely-fought battles at Trenton, Brandywine Creek, and Yorktown. Shaara draws his readers into the ethical and strategic dilemmas of his characters. More than simple events, the dates and battles are fleshed out in our imaginations as momentary choices that could easily have turned out differently even with the same actors. Shaara's sequel shows how the philosophical ideas of the Founding Fathers outgrew the library in the theater of war.

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
Take one of the most remarkable events in world history, humanize the main players with realistic dialogue, and add a solid narrator. The result is a better-than-average depiction of the American Revolution and iconic figures such as Washington, Franklin, Cornwallis, and Arnold. Narrator Grover Gardner sets the tone from the beginning, reading in a straightforward, level voice that allows the writing to move the story. His characterizations are not showy, but rather capture the essence of the people in the book: humble Lafayette, decisive Washington, arrogant Cornwallis. Gardner has an interesting voice that serves him well during the lengthy narrative passages. His greatest gift, though, is that he amplifies the author's words while bringing drama and humanity to this enjoyable look at history. R.I.G. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
